Finding out your child has a cavity can feel like a bigger deal than it needs to be. The good news: a filling is one of the most straightforward things we do, and Dr. Cantu and Dr. Wengler have helped plenty of kids through it without any fuss. Your child leaves with a tooth that looks and feels as healthy as it was before the cavity got to it.
One Less Worry for You, and Back to Being a Kid for Them
Hearing that your child has a cavity can bring up a lot at once: wondering how it happened and worrying about how they’ll handle the appointment (hoping it won’t put them off the dentist for good). Those feelings are completely understandable, and they’re exactly what your child’s dentist keeps in mind from the moment your child sits down.
- Less of the tooth removed: Composite bonds directly to the tooth structure, so we only need to remove what the cavity actually damaged. Nothing more.
- No dark patch left behind: The material is color-matched to your child’s natural tooth, so once it’s placed, there’s nothing to see. Just a tooth that looks exactly as it should.
- Holds up to kid life: Composite is durable enough to handle everyday chewing, crunching, and the occasional thing kids eat that they probably shouldn’t.
- Done in a single visit: Your child comes in with a cavity and leaves with it sorted. No follow-up appointments, no waiting.

A Filling That Looks Like It Was Never There
Silver fillings had a good run. But composite resin, which is the tooth-colored material we use for every filling, does something that the old metal ones never could: it disappears. Matched to your child’s natural tooth color and bonded directly to the tooth structure, it becomes part of the tooth rather than just sitting in it.
That bonding also means the filling becomes part of the tooth rather than a patch on top of it. There’s no outline, no shadow, no way to tell it was ever there.
And yes, it holds up to kid life: all the crunching and chewing, sometimes on things that they probably shouldn’t. Composite is tough enough to handle all of it, without leaving a trace.
In and Out, With a Smile (and a Prize!) to Show for It
Your child won’t need to know the clinical details. But as a parent, it helps to know what to expect so you can reassure them the night before that tomorrow’s appointment is no big deal. –
- They’ll feel settled before anything starts: their dentist will take a moment to talk with them, answer any questions they’ve got, and make sure they’re comfortable. If they need a little extra support to feel at ease, sedation options are available.
- Their tooth gets numbed: a small amount of local anesthetic makes sure they won’t feel anything during the procedure. Most kids are surprised by how little there is to it.
- The cavity is cleaned out and filled: that nasty decay is gently removed, the area is cleaned, and the composite material is placed and shaped. And a nifty curing light hardens it in seconds.
- That’s it, they’re all done: the whole appointment should take less than an hour, and they’ll walk out with a tooth that’s as good as new, and probably a little something from the treasure chest too.

Your Child Is In Safe Hands
Dr. Cantu and Dr. Wengler are both Board Certified pediatric dental specialists. That’s not just a credential on the wall: it means they’ve spent years beyond dental school learning specifically how children’s teeth develop, and how to keep a young patient calm and comfortable through a procedure that might otherwise feel scary.
When your child is in the chair, they’re being cared for by someone who chose to dedicate their career to kids, and who knows exactly how to make this feel okay for them.
